As a general rule, it's best to put on your jewelry after applying cosmetics, perfume, hair spray, or hand cream. A little rub down afterward with a soft cotton cloth and storing your jewelry in a safe place, away from other pieces that could scratch it, will help your handcrafted jewelry look beautiful for years to come.
Silver:
I like to store sterling silver pieces in an anti-tarnish bag, which I provide with each purchase. It protects sterling from dust, moisture, and tarnish for up to 2 years. A light rubbing with a jewelry polishing cloth will also help remove dirt and tarnish and renew the shine. When using a liquid solution, be sure to choose a cleanser that's safe for stones, pearls, glass beads and Swarovski, if necessary.
Pearls:
Pearls love the body's natural oils but care must be taken to protect them from chemicals, such as those listed above, which damage the pearl's natural lustre. Store pearls in a soft, breathable pouch or tissue paper to protect them from scratches. Avoid anti-tarnish bags or other containers that will not allow them to breathe. Take care when polishing silver, gold or brass components so that harmful chemicals do not come into contact with the pearls.
Swarovski Crystals:
To maintain the sparkle of your crystal jewelry, care for them as you would pearls and avoid exposure to chemicals, such as those listed above. Clean with a soft lint free cotton cloth and avoid polishing cloths or jewelry cleaners that are meant for silver or gold. Cleansers that contain ammonia or alcohol can damage crystals. If necessary, use a damp cloth to clean crystals but don't immerse in water, ultrasonic, or steam cleaner. I've read that a diluted window cleaner and water solution is good for problem spots but have yet to try it.
Swarovski Pearls:
Swarovksi pearls have a leaded crystal core and a pearl coating that creates a lustre similar to organic pearls but much more durable. Although Swarovksi pearls are resistant to many of the things that harm organic pearls, it's best to store them in a soft pouch. Buff occasionally with a soft, dry cloth to maintain the original lustrous finish. Avoid harsh chemicals and immersion in water.
Glass:
Glass seed beads are quite durable and require little care. Manufacturers state, however, that some types of beads may deteriorate from bright sun or from friction with skin acids. Although I don't forsee a problem, I will stand behind the quality of the materials I use and promptly repair or replace a piece that may be defective.
